Rene Benet Studies Meditation

Peter the Carpenter’s room was monastic, as one might expect, bare except for a sleeping mat and a few cushions and a workbench where he restored musical instruments. Indian deities and mandalas decorated the walls.

Rene, squatting on a cushion and yearning for an honest chair, opened the conversation: “Our topic is The System, How to Beat.”

Peter, cradling a crude earthen cup full of tea in one hand, said nothing. He raised the other hand and then pointed an index finger straight up.

“That’s all very well, but how do you get there?” asked Rene.

“You meditate.”

“’The Search for the Beyond Within,’ that sort of thing?”

“Just so,” said Peter. “The idea is to bring yourself into perfect harmony. In order to do that, you have to get your self out of the way, and so you go into yourself until you understand your self does not exist and, thus, it does not.”

“Right on, I guess.”

“It’s like a drop of water returning to the ocean.”

“And then you never again have to get up and go to work?”

Peter did not smile. “Try it.”

“Well yeah,” said Rene, “but I was hoping maybe I could do all that with a little ‘elp from me friends, namely LSD.”

“That’s all bull, man,” said Peter calmly. “There is no instant nirvana.”

He came forward on his knees and took Rene by the ankles. “You cross your legs like so. Don’t slump … hold your head up, let the energy flow naturally up and down your spine.” He pressed his hand in the small of Rene’s back. “That’s it. Now breathe in through your nose, deep but slow … no, deeper.… You’re breathing with the top of your chest. Use your stomach to pull the air all the way down. On the exhale make a sound … Ommmm! Ommmm! … out loud or to yourself. OK. Now make your mind a complete blank; that’s the whole point of the thing. Shut out all the chatter, no fantasies, think of nothing, don’t think at all. Tell you what: pretend you are looking at a blank movie screen. Got it? Good. Just relax, breathe, go blank, try to find your center. Good. I’ll be back in half an hour.”

Now alone, Rene Benet embarked on a spiritual journey. He tried to imagine an empty movie screen, like before the Saturday morning cartoon festival at the Trans Lux, but he kept getting movies. His back began to ache so he leaned against the wall. Then he forgot his “Ommmm,” so he got that going again, but a big itch developed between his shoulders. Then he developed another itch in his privates and began to worry if he had the crabs. This made him think about an old girl friend until he realized that his breathing was all wrong, so he went back to sucking air through his nose, but a piece of snot in one nostril kept flicking back and forth as he breathed: “Plick-plock; plick-plock.” By this time, his feet had fallen asleep.
